Do Calming Teas Really Work? Here’s What to Know Before You Sip

Tea has become a standard meal companion in everyone’s diet and its benefits have been widely known for millenia. Stress too, has slowly become the silent and often ignored malady in the life of the 21st century human. While the latter one is an issue that comes from deep within our cells and that we should all work on to mitigate the unpleasant side effects it brings ionto our lifes, we can also get some help by introducing relaxing substances, such as a calming variety of tea species.

Herbal teas containing lavender, valerian, passion flower and chamomile soothe and calm the nervous system and CBD tea can also help achieving more relaxed states of being.

Research has shown lavender can induce a calming effect to improve sleep, and causes significant decreases of blood pressure, heart rate and skin temperature.

Calming teas for stress and anxiety.

Herbal teas designed to help with sleep may also help with stress and anxiety symptoms, and those which contain chamomile can be particularly helpful to unwind in times of stress.

Chamomile contains flavonoids, which are believed to bind to receptors in the brain and induce sedation and have a calming effect. 

Green tea is another tea which may be helpful for stress — however, this tea does contain caffeine so it’s a good idea to limit green tea consumption to during the day only.

Calming teas for digestion.

Digestive issues such as bloating, wind and nausea can be a burden and many of us suffer from them. The tea of choice for these symtomps is ginger tea. Ginger has an anti-nausea effect and has also been proven to alleviate indigestion by speeding up the emptying of the stomach in people with the condition.

Normally digestion blends contain ginger, cardamon and fennel to have after meals. Peppermint tea can also be used to assist digestion.
